Home for Lee is a 3,000-acre ranch in San Saba, Tex., about 240 km from San Antonio.

"My neighbors in San Saba are like family. My celebrity doesn't matter to them, so I prefer their company."

Jones now only has visiting privileges with his 14-year-old son Austin and five-year-old daughter Victoria.

"My son loves coming to the sets of my films. He's made appearances in four of them now."

It's a dangerous route to take, but Lee's reputation for being a bully both on sets and with the press has to be addressed.

"My reputation is derived from critics talking among themselves. It has nothing to do with the reality of who I am. Those who work with me know better."

So why did director Joel Schumacher recall that Jones was "unconscionably cruel to Jim Carrey on the set of Batman Forever?"

"I refuse to respond to such comments, except to say I didn't have a good time making Batman Forever."

Jones did have a better time making The Fugitive, the film that earned him his Oscar as best supporting actor. He will begin filming the sequel, U.S. Marshalls, on June 3.

Jones will be seen later this summer opposite Will Smith in the science fiction comedy Men In Black.

"It's a cool movie and Will is a cool guy. My son is 14. He's the target audience for Men In Black and he can hardly wait."

Jones comes from a broken home. His parents divorced and both remarried. He recalls that his relationship with his father was "combative and emotionally abusive. He wasn't there for me that much."

Jones used acting and sports as an escape from his unhappy family life, but he says:"I have nothing to escape from now. I like being me and I like the process of acting.

"I find it a privilege to make my living using my genius for creative imagination. It makes me feel clean and healthy."
